What happens if you change your course or education provider in Australia?

Many international students think about changing their course or moving to a new education provider at some point in their study journey. It is completely normal to feel unsure or to realise that your current course is not the right fit for you. But before you make any decision, it is important to understand how this change can affect your enrolment, your CoE, and most importantly, your student visa.

Changing your course within the same provider is usually easier. You will need to meet the entry requirements for the new course, and your provider must approve the change. Once approved, they will issue a new Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Your visa will remain valid as long as you stay enrolled in a CRICOS registered course. However, if you switch to a lower AQF level, you may need to apply for a new student visa, so it is important to check this before starting the process.

Changing your education provider is more challenging. If you want to transfer to a new provider, you must complete at least six months of your principal course. If you have not completed the six months period, you will need a release letter from your current provider. Some providers may refuse a release if you are failing subjects, if your reason for changing is not strong enough, or if the new course does not match your study plan. Once you receive a release and your new provider issues a new CoE, your visa remains valid as long as you stay continuously enrolled.

Making changes without proper guidance can lead to serious issues such as visa cancellation, gaps in enrolment, financial loss, or unnecessary stress. This is why it is important to think carefully and get professional advice before taking any step. Many students change courses for valid reasons, such as wanting a different career pathway, struggling academically, or finding a course that suits them better. These reasons are understandable, but they must be handled correctly to avoid problems.
