Diploma, Bachelor or Masters can all be potential study options got students to come to Australia. Studying for 2 years (92 weeks) before gaining a 485 Temporary Graduate visa and remaining in Australia – regional area for 3 years or a metropolitan area for 4 years. Lastly, one can apply for Permanent Residency 189 (metropolitan) or 191 (regional) to become a Permanent Resident.

What are the important things to note:

The course must be 2 years in duration – acceptable study options include diploma, bachelor, masters, graduate diploma and PhD
You must have IELTS of 6.5 (minimum of 5.5 in each band) for 500 student visa, IELTS 6.5 for 485 Temporary Graduate Visa
You must be under 50 years of age
Those in the vocational industry/stream maybe required to complete a skilled assessment
Eligible only for HKSAR or BNO passport holders
There is no limit on working rights for a Temporary Graduate visa, however, one must show proof of address, tax return etc when applying for PR
You may bring your spouse and children aged under 23, however they are subject to international school fees

What are the biggest questions we get asked?

Am I able to take my boyfriend or girlfriend? Yes, however you need to be able to prove you’ve been in a relationship. Otherwise, we recommend you apply separately or wait until you have your Temporary Graduate visa and adding your boyfriend or girlfriend then

I do not have to work. I can sit around waiting until I get Permanent Residency. Sure! Keep in mind though when applying for Permanent Residency the Department will ask you to prove that you have resided in Australia i.e. utilities bill, income (tax return), rent receipts, bank statements etc.

Do I have to do IELTS or PTE 2-3 times? Yes – once for student visa, a separate score is needed for the Temporary Graduate visa and also for the 189/191 Permanent Residency visa

Is it getting harder to migrate to Australia? Yes migration numbers for international students to Australia have been capped at 270,000 for 2025. However this has limited impact on HKSAR passport holders with under 10,000 students studying in Australia which is a limited percentage compared to other international passport holders.
