Australia’s migration changes so far

While the latest migration strategy settings are still evolving, we already know that the permanent Migration Program remains capped at 185,000 places, with around 70% for Skilled visas and 30% for Family visas . At the same time, several practical changes have already taken effect:

  • Higher visa application charges across most major visa categories from 1 July 2026, including student, graduate, skilled, partner, and Skills in Demand (482) visas
  • A continuing push to prioritise onshore applicants, meaning people already studying or working in Australia often see better processing and invitation outcomes than offshore applicants .
  • Priority processing for trade and construction occupations through targeted skills assessments, helping qualified tradespeople move more quickly into the Australian workforce.

What may come next

Policy discussion and migration strategy suggest further tightening rather than expansion. Likely directions include:

  • Stronger scrutiny of visitor and Working Holiday visas, particularly where they are being used as de facto long-stay or work pathways rather than short-term travel
  • Longer processing times for family visas (partner, child of Australian citizens)
  • Continued focus on younger, highly skilled migrants and more weight given to Australian work experience, in-demand occupations, and clear economic contribution

Details can still change, so it is important to follow official announcements rather than assumptions.

What this means for you

For families and skilled workers, these trends mean:

  • Visa applications are becoming more expensive and require more careful budgeting.
  • Being onshore with study or work history in Australia is increasingly advantageous compared to applying from overseas .
  • Applicants in trades and priority occupations may see faster skills assessments and stronger pathways, while others may face more competition for places
  • Potentially having to wait longer for those visa grants (for family visas)
