How to Choose a Top‑100 University in Australia for Your Child

Australia has several universities in the global top 100, with strong student support, good graduate outcomes and, in many cases, lower tuition fees than similar‑ranked UK options. Well‑known names include the University of Melbourne, University of New South Wales, the University of Sydney, Australian National University (ANU), Monash University, the University of Queensland (UQ) and Adelaide University.

Step 1: Use rankings as a starting point
Check global tables such as the QS World University Rankings to see which Australian universities consistently appear in the top 100. At the moment, the University of Melbourne is ranked as Australia’s top university, closely followed by UNSW Sydney and the University of Sydney in most major rankings.
Go one level deeper and look at subject rankings. For example, Monash University has multiple subjects in the global top 50, including strong results in Education, Pharmacy and Business, which can be more relevant than the overall rank if your child already has a clear interest.

Step 2: Match the course to your child
Start with your child’s strengths and interests: for example Nursing vs Pharmacy, Business vs Data Science, Arts and Humanities vs STEM.
Check each course for key details: entry requirements and indicative scores, course length (3 or 4 years), whether work placements or internships are included, and whether there are honours or postgraduate options after graduation.

Step 3: Understand the costs
As a guide, international tuition fees at Australian universities often fall in the range of roughly AUD 25,000–45,000 per year for undergraduate programs, depending on the university and discipline (with medicine and some health or lab‑based courses at the higher end).
Encourage your child to look at scholarship and bursary options, as many universities offer merit‑based or need‑based awards specifically for international students.

Step 4: Check visa and living requirements
For a student visa, your child must show they can cover both tuition and living costs, with current guidance requiring evidence of around AUD 29,710 in funds for a single student to cover 12 months of living expenses.
Research safety, transport and accommodation in each city. A slightly lower‑ranked university in a safer, more affordable city where your child feels comfortable can be a better overall choice than the “top name” in a location that is too expensive or overwhelming.

Step 5: Look at graduate outcomes and support
Compare graduate outcomes such as employment rates, further‑study rates and typical starting salaries in your child’s field, and check whether the university offers strong career services, internship programs and industry links.
Investigate student support and wellbeing: international‑student offices, academic support, counselling, and orientation programs all make a big difference to how smoothly your child settles in.

Step 6: Visit campuses (in person or online)
If possible, attend open days or campus tours to get a feel for class sizes, facilities and campus culture; if you cannot travel, make use of virtual tours and online information sessions.
Encourage your child to speak with current students or recent graduates via webinars, social media or school networks so they can ask honest questions about teaching quality, workload and social life.

Involving your child and getting help
Your child should be actively involved in choosing both the course and the university, with careers counsellors helping them understand subject choices, entry requirements and realistic options.
